A new Butler MR-24 standing seam metal roof system was retrofitted over the existing corrugated metal roof using low-profile hat channels secured directly to the steel structure. The project scope included new gutters, flashings, and all associated accessories, providing the Owner with a 20-year watertight guarantee.

During the evaluation of the existing conditions, rust damage was identified in portions of the existing purlins. With the assistance of a structural engineering firm, a repair detail and installation method were developed to allow the damaged purlins to be repaired in place. This approach resulted in significant cost savings for the Virginia Port Authority by avoiding full purlin replacement while also encapsulating the asbestos contained in the existing roof panel finish.

The total construction cost for the new roof system on this 300,000-square-foot facility was just under $1.2 million.
