RCS recently completed the roof replacement design and construction administration for a large portion of the Domino Sugar Refinery facility in Baltimore, Maryland. The project was the result of a catastrophic failure (dust explosion) that resulted in extensive damages including severe damage to the existing roof system and the structural Tectum roof deck. RCS was required to perform our initial evaluations and provide full design documents within fourteen (14) calendar days. The bidding process was also accelerated due to the vulnerable state of condition the existing assembly was in over the facilities packaging and shipping lines. RCS provided Domino with documents for the roof replacement over the critical
shipping area of then plant within 14 days of the event.
The project consisted of approximately 65,106 square feet of roof replacement over a fully operational facility. The new roof system designed for this project was a Siplast, two-ply modified bitumen membrane system installed with hot asphalt directly over Tectum decking.
The project also included approximately 20,000 square feet of Tectum deck replacement due to the explosion damages and interior protection under deck tarping installation to protect the contents of the building.
The roof replacement on this project was completed on time and within budget. The roof replacement cost came in at approximately $12.00 per square foot and our design and administration fees were less than 4%.
